Jump Into Arms
An advanced trick great for showing off and building trust!
Having your dog jump up into your arms is one of the more impressive tricks out there. It’s also surprisingly easy – it just takes some time and patience! Make sure you start in a calm environment, and slow down if your dog is tired or stressed!
Jumping up into your arms is basically just the “Up” command, but used in a very specific way. Your dog needs to know the basics first, so start with a simple lure and “up” onto easy, stable surfaces.
Jumping into your arms takes trust and confidence! To build this trust, you’ll have to ask your dog to jump up onto lots of different objects with different surfaces, and sometimes even a little unstable! You want your dog to know that you’ll never lead them into anything dangerous! And always make sure to make it fun!
One of the most difficult parts of this trick is when your dog needs to learn to launch their whole body up into your arms! This is a bit tougher than slowly climbing up onto something. Make sure to use lots of enthusiasm and a tall object to teach a full-send before doing the same on your lap.
Building up to a full jump into your arms takes slow “shaping”, and you can’t do it all in one session. Take a break and practice on a few separate days. Each time you should aim to build up to where you are standing up straight more and more. And make sure it stays positive, high-energy, and fun!
